FACTS AND STATISTICS
Welcome to the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center's Finding Facts and Statistics weblog. On this post, you will find a collection of descriptions of and links to websites and information you will need in your grant writing, marketing, and public awareness endeavors.
The post is divided in to several sections, which are indicated by the menu at the bottom.
We've also featured a site or two for each topic, which are highlighted in the menu. These featured sites are the ones we think you are likely to rely upon time and again for up-to-date and specific information that supports your work.

When you get to the homepage, look to the left of your screen at the list of links to the interactive maps. Click on the "Socio-Econ" link. On this page, click on "SocioEcon Mapper". When you get here click on "SocioEcon Mapper" again. Here you'll see a map of the US. There are 24 maps that display a wide variety of data, for instance the default map is "Median Income." There are several which may be useful for your research, such as "No School No Degree," "25 + No HS Diploma," etc. The map is interactive in the sense that you may view not only the 24 maps, but you can view specific zip codes, counties, etc. There are 5 tools at the top of the map that enable you to specify your search. If you scroll to the bottom of the map you will see a yellow "Help" button. Here you'll find directions to use the five map tools ("Zoom To," "Info," "Zoom In," "Zoom Out," and "Pan"). In addition there are directional arrow buttons that allow you to negotiate your way around an area. There are several ways to zoom to your state and area of interest. You can click on the "Find" button and fill in which blanks you choose depending on the size of the area that you want to view. For instance, you may enter only a zip code, then use the pop-down menu under "Compare Maps" and choose "25 + No High School Diploma" and you will see color-coded block groups within the zip code with percentage statistics. You may also click on the map and use the buttons on the left to zoom in or out.
