Adults and Learning Disabilities

This online course is designed for any adult literacy teacher and volunteer. Through this online course, you will learn the keys to success in working with adults with learning disabilities through:

  • understanding the legal issues involved,
  • how to plan appropriate instruction, and
  • how to adapt your instruction

Through the online course format, you can learn at your own pace from the comfort and convenience of your own home or office. Facilitators, available to help you throughout the eight-week course, lead you through the content and technical aspects of the course.

Each week's lesson addresses a topic in adult education pertaining to learning disabilities. Course activities include readings, assignments, and discussions. The lessons are sequential.

Lessons and resources included in the course:

  • Introduction to Adults and Learning Disabilities
  • Legal Issues Related to Adults with Learning Disabilities
  • Assessment and Intake
  • Screening and Diagnosis
  • The Planning Process, Part 1
  • The Planning Process, Part 2
  • Adapting Instruction
  • Collaboration

Completion of the course is designed to require a minimum of 40 hours of your time; approximately five hours for each of the eight topic sessions. However, you may find that you want to spend more time on some topics.

In order to receive the certificate for participating in the Adults and Learning Disabilities training, you must complete all assignments, respond to each discussion question, and respond at least once to one of your classmates in any of the week’s discussion/assignment forums.

Remember that, although you will gain from doing the activities, you will learn most from discussions with your online colleagues and facilitator. To keep our discussions as productive as possible, you must stay within the timeframe outlined for this course.

As part of the registration process, we ask that you go through a short tutorial on online learning in order to better prepare yourself for success. Click the register now button below to begin the tutorial.
