Choosing your Additional Workshop

In the program manager and instructor strands of the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program, Levels I and II consist of designated courses, which must be taken consecutively, as well as one additional workshop to be selected by the individual participant.

The self-evaluation that you completed as part of the certification program should guide you in selecting your additional training. The course might be one that offers more knowledge and information on some aspect of a topic covered in one of the certification workshops. It could address something you have recently become interested in or exposed to. It might focus on building a skill or using a technique that had been unfamiliar to you.

Guidelines for Self-Selected Workshops

  • Your self-selected course must be at least 3 hours in duration.
  • It may be taken in a face-to-face or online format.
  • Trainings that are required by state policy (such as TABE, CASAS, BEST Plus, or trainings in the From Intake to Assessment series) will not fulfill the self-selected course requirement.
  • The workshop should be one that you have not taken before.
  • You must attend session 1 of the level of certification you are pursuing before selecting your additional workshop for that level.
  • Self-selected workshops may be offered by the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center.
  • If the training you select is not one offered by the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center, you must provide one of the following:
    • general outline of the workshop's content
    • flyer announcing the workshop
    • course syllabus (if this was a college/university course)
    • web address (if this was an online course)
and a copy of your certificate of completion.

If you have any further questions about selecting your course, please contact the Resource Center at 800-237-0178 or email valrcero@vcu.edu.
