Writing

This section contains the writing Learning Projects and the Inquiry Activities. Like the other content areas, all the Inquiry Activities encourage the development of the analytical, practical, and creative thinking skills, the foundation on which this approach to instruction for GED preparation is based.

The Inquiry Template modified for writing is presented. In writing the need for planning and organizing is introduced in step 2, and the two separate processes, writing and revising, are listed under step 3. Actual test items from Practice Test PA and the writing prompt for the essay are used as the bases for the Learning Projects.

The Learning Projects for writing move learners to an understanding of the stages of the writing process from the earliest pre-writing steps through several kinds of revisions. Learners will begin the process by focusing on the topic on which they will write. Early Inquiry Activities address generating ideas and organizing ideas into a logical, coherent piece.

After the writers have produced their rough draft, the Learning Projects address how the essays will be evaluated on the GED Test. Learners will have the opportunity to evaluate essays, working with the four-point scoring guide used by essay readers. In the revision Learning Projects, learners first look at revision for clear expression, then at mechanics and usage, and finally style.

Multiple-choice question are embedded in these revision Learning Projects. The final Learning Project addresses test-taking techniques for answering the multiple choice questions not already covered. This is a good review for those learners who are ready to take the test.
