Knowing
and Teaching Elementary Mathematics: Teachers' Understanding
of Fundamental Mathematics in China and the United States,
by Liping Ma. Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, New Jersey, 1999.
Why
do Chinese students typically outperform American students
in math? Even considering Chinese teachers receive far less
formal mathematics education than in the US? Their success
traces back to a deeper, integrated, understanding of math
that is part of the Chinese culture. This book helps the reader
improve his/her teaching approach to basic math by improving
how she thinks about and understands the subject. Real-life
stories and examples |

GED Math Problem Solver: Reasoning Skills for Application,
by Myrna Manly. Contemporary Books, Illinois. This book and

1992 version, in the fall of 2002.
Terrific resource for understanding the thinking process
behind math, and teaching math to build number sense and application,
rather than as an endless series of rules and computation. |
