This
section contains the math-focused Learning Projects and the accompanying
Inquiry Activities. All the Inquiry Activities employ discovery
and group learning, thus encouraging the development of the analytical,
creative and practical thinking skills that underwrite this approach
to GED preparation, along with the content knowledge necessary
for passing the test.
Because
GED 2002 math requires reading comprehension, thinking,
reasoning and estimation as well as computational skills, we incorporate
the reading, writing and thinking skills into the instruction.
The
Math Learning Projects use Official GED Math Practice
Test questions.
Similar ideas are collected into Learning Projects;
Inquiry Activities in each Project are sequenced from simple to
the
more complex.
Through this organization, learners will be able to
recognize
the underlying math concepts, thereby developing a higher
level of understanding of mathematics.
The
Template for Math Inquiry is presented, modified
from the overall General Template. It presents the idea of estimation,
a useful
skill in life and test-taking, as well as expressing
the
idea in other terms. Both of these are strong concepts
to understanding math.
Math
Learning Project: GED Math & You
After
students have taken the Math portion of the Official
GED Practice Test (Form A) and have had the test scored, they
will have a picture
of where they need to focus their attentions.
This is a good place for the class to do the GED Math and You Inquiry
Activities.
The
first explores their experiences with math, and
the second
will develop their individual Math Action Plans.
It is important for
them to establish what they will need to do,
and
how to develop their own approaches towards doing it.This
Action Plan, like the GED and You Action Plan,
is the student's own assessment tool.
Watch
as Mrs. Harriman's class does the math.
