Writing Image

Writing allows us to communicate with others and express ourselves; it helps us learn and is an important means by which we demonstrate that learning. Writing skills are demanded by employers, job training programs, and academic institutions. Technologies like email and social media make writing an even more integral part of daily life, both at home and in the workplace.

The Important Links and Resources sections to the left provide writing instructors with information, tools, and practical suggestions that will help them help learners become more skilled and confident writers. The News section will feature new resources, instructional ideas, research, reports, and upcoming professional development opportunities.   • Virginia Content Standards Training Online
    Virginia’s ESOL and GED content standards address writing and provide guidance for adult educators.
  • Developing Writing Skills in Adults Online
    This facilitated, eight-week online course investigates research-based strategies for writing instruction and their practical application in the adult education environment.
  • Developing Writing Skills in Adult Learners
    This face-to-face workshop for ABE/GED instructors takes a hands-on approach to teaching the writing process, with a focus on revision skills needed to pass the GED Language Arts, Writing Test.
  • Teaching Writing Skills to Adult English Language Learners
    This face-to-face workshop for ESOL instructors explores teaching activities for each stage of the writing process with a focus on identifying appropriate error-correction strategies.
