Susan Watson Bio Pic In her role as ESOL Specialist, Susan coordinates ESOL teacher professional development that aligns with state and federal level initiatives, as well as teachers' interests and needs. She also designs and facilitates online courses, such as the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program series. Susan participates in a number of projects and committees, one of which is the Erasmus Plus project known as EU-Speak. Since coming to Virginia in 2007, she has taught ESOL for Prince William County Schools Adult Education Program and Northern Virginia Community College Workforce Development Division. She has presented numerous workshops on adult ESOL and adult literacy at VAILL conferences and EL/Civics Symposiums. In 2018, Susan will present original research at TESOL International, the American Education Research Association conference, and the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry.

Susan came to adult education / ESOL as a military veteran and career-switcher because it combines two things she loves: teaching and working with adults. Before coming to Virginia, she taught adults in a number of settings, to include the military and health care industries. She also spent three years as an EFL teacher in Japan.

Susan is currently a PhD candidate at Virginia Commonwealth University where she studies second language teaching and learning with a focus on adults with low literacy. She has a M.Ed. in adult literacy, a TESL graduate certificate, and a Virginia ESOL certification.
