Barbara E. Gibson has served as Associate Director of The Literacy Institute since it was established in 2003. She has concurrently managed the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center, a division of The Institute. Prior to that she was the Associate Director of both the Virginia Literacy Foundation and the Workforce Improvement Network, a former partnership between the Foundation and James Madison University. For seven years, before joining the Foundation, Ms. Gibson was Executive Director of The READ Center, a regional adult literacy organization serving the Richmond metropolitan area. She has over 35 years of nonprofit and governmental management experience. She has conducted training and made presentations nationally and internationally on such topics as workforce education, services marketing, strategic planning, nonprofit management, and adult literacy programming.
Ms. Gibson holds a Master of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Richmond and a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition, she has completed numerous post-graduate courses in adult education, marketing, management, and psychology. She is currently a member of the Virginia Board of Education’s Adult Education Advisory Committee, the Capital Area Workforce Investment Board, the National Institute for Literacy’s LINCS Region 2 Partner Committee, and the Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education. Highlights of her community service include serving as president of the Richmond Public Library Foundation, 2003-04, and chair of WCVE Public Television’s Community Advisory Board, 1997-98. She is a member of Leadership Metro Richmond, Class of 1987.
